Sleep Medicine Physicians

Melisa A. Coaker, M.D. is the medical director of the Sleep Center at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Coaker, along with Drs. Wendy Fluegel, Jason Wittmer, Nguyen-Ly Huynh, PA-C, and Jef Start, DO, specialize in all areas of sleeping disorders and their treatments, with special interest in sleep apnea and hypoventilation disorders. All five physicians are board certified in Sleep Medicine.


  • Melisa A. Coaker, MD

    Melisa A. Coaker, MA, MD, was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. She completed undergraduate and graduate training at Wayne State University in Detroit. She completed medical school at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, and finished her Internal Medicine residency and Sleep Medicine fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

    Her special interests include sleep disordered breathing and shift work disorder, both of which were the basis for her fellowship research. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Sleep Medicine. Dr. Coaker sees patients at the Mercy Sleep Center in Clive, IA as well as at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center where she is the Medical Director.

    Dr. Coaker and her husband reside in Des Moines.

  • Wendy L. Fluegel, MD

    Wendy L. Fluegel, M.D., born and raised in central Missouri, attended school at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. She subsequently received training in internal medicine, pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She was chief resident in internal medicine. Dr. Fluegel was an associate professor at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, in conjunction with private practice from 1995 to 1998. Research interests include alternative treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea and asthma treatment and outcome.

    She continues to be interested in all aspects of sleep medicine and pulmonary disorders. She is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary and sleep medicine with board eligibility in critical care medicine.

    Dr. Fluegel is married and has four children.


  • Nguyen-Ly Huynh, PA-C

    Nguyen-Ly Huynh, PA-C, was born in Nha Trang, Vietnam and moved to Iowa in 1995. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Iowa and attended the Long Island University at Brooklyn, NY for her Physician Assistant degree. She is currently certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant. She is interested in all aspects of sleep medicine.

    She is married and resides in Urbandale.




















  • Jef Start, DO

    Jefrey Start, D.O., was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania. He completed his undergraduate degree at Clarion University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Start was a Sleep Technologist at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Sleep and Chronobiology Laboratory prior to completing his medical education at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his Family Practice residency at Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania.
    His special interests include narcolepsy, sleep disordered breathing and insomnia as well as a broad focus on all aspects of pediatric and adult sleep and wellness. Dr. Start is Board Certified in Sleep Medicine and Family Medicine.
    Dr. Start and his wife, Jayne, reside in Pella, Iowa. They have six children.

  • Jason B. Wittmer, MD

    Jason B. Wittmer, M.D., was born and raised in central Kansas. He completed undergraduate and medical education at the University of Kansas. He completed internal medicine residency and pulmonary/critical care fellowships at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Dr. Wittmer is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, sleep medicine and critical care medicine.

    Dr. Wittmer sees patients at Pella Regional Medical Center where he serves as the medical director of the Sleep Center.

CIC Associates is a referral-based pactice. This means that a primary care physician or another specialist refers patients to our practice to evaluate a problem.

Grinnell Regional Medical Center partnered with Mercy
Sleep Center for diagnosis and treatment of sleep
disorders. Mercy Sleep Center operates the sleep lab
at GRMC with sleep tests completed three nights per
week.

Melisa Coaker, MD, MA, with Mercy Sleep Center,
provides consultations and diagnosis for patients.
She sees patients the first and third Tuesday of each
month in Grinnell.
