The CIC Physicians

Roger T. Liu, M.D., was born in Korea, graduated from the Korea University Medical College in 1971, and came to the United States in 1972. He completed a pulmonary diseases fellowship at Rutgers Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ, in 1978. His interests are clinical pulmonary diseases, pulmonary physiology and sleep disorders. He and his wife, Marian, live in West Des Moines. They have three children. He is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and sleep medicine.


Daniel H. Gervich, M.D., is a native Iowan. He attended undergraduate school and medical school at the University of Iowa. Dr. Gervich received his postgraduate training at Los Angeles County University of Southern California Medical School in Los Angeles, University of Oregon Health Sciences Center in Portland, and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Dr. Gervich is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the specialty of internal medicine and the subspecialties of infectious disease and critical care medicine. Dr. Gervich was trained and certified in hyperbaric medicine at Long Beach Memorial Hospital in California. He and his wife, Eve, have four sons. Areas of particular interest to Dr. Gervich include infectious diseases in immunologically-compromised patients, including transplant patients and patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS); hospital epidemiology, infection control, and device-related infections.


Steven G. Berry, M.D., was born and raised in St. Paul, MN, where he completed his secondary education. He received a bachelor of arts degree at Luther College in Decorah, IA, and his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Internal medicine training in Michigan and pulmonary fellowship training at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City led to private practice in Des Moines with Dr. Liu and Dr. Gervich. He has a special interest in asthma and pulmonary rehabilitation. Dr. Berry is board-certified in internal and pulmonary medicine. He and his wife, Linda, have four children.


Donald L. Burrows, M.D., was born in Chicago and moved to Des Moines in 1984. He attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor as an undergraduate and the University of Illinois in Chicago for his medical degree. He completed his internal medicine residency and his critical care fellowship at the University of Illinois. Dr. Burrows spent the last year of his fellowship researching sleep apnea. He is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary, and sleep medicine. Dr. Burrows is medical director of the Sleep Center at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. He and his wife, Nena, also from Chicago, have three children. His interests are sleep disorders and critical care medicine.


Michael C. Witte, D.O., was born in Muscatine. He attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City as an undergraduate and the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, graduating in 1977. His internal medicine and pulmonary and critical care training was obtained at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Denver, CO. He is board-certified in internal, pulmonary and critical care medicine. He joined CIC Associates after his Army duty was completed in 1987. His interests are asthma and critical care medicine. He and his wife Linda, from Oskaloosa, have three children.


Gerard A. Matysik, D.O., is a graduate of the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines. After graduation in 1984, he completed a rotating internship at Allentown, PA, Osteopathic Medicine. He subsequently completed his internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH. At the Cleveland Clinic he received specialty training in Nd:YAG laser therapy for endobronchial and tracheal photo-resection of both malignant and benign processes. In addition, he has extensive experience in transtracheal catheter oxygen therapy and endobronchial brachy-therapy for palliative treatment of lung carcinoma. His interests include asthma, pulmonary function, exercise testing and critical care medicine. He joined CIC Associates in June 1992.


Daniel J. Schroeder, M.D., was reared on a farm near New Salem, N.D. Dr. Schroeder attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and the University of North Dakota Medical School, where he graduated in 1983. Included in his training was one year at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. His internal medicine training was completed at the Gundersen Clinic and Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI. Upon completion he joined a group practice in internal medicine in Bismarck, ND. After four years in Bismarck, he had a two-year infectious disease fellowship at Creighton University in Omaha, NE. He completed his fellowship in July of 1992, at which time he joined CIC Associates. Dr. Schroeder, board certified in internal medicine and infectious disease, has special interests in infections in the critically ill and travel medicine. Dr. Schroeder and his wife, Donna, have three children.


Ravi K. Vemuri, M.D., was born in India. He moved with his family to Wisconsin in 1969. He attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison for two years of undergraduate training. He attended Kurnool Medical College in India, graduating in 1985. He completed his one-year rotating internship at the Government General Hospital in Kurnool. He completed his internal medicine residency at Sinai Samaritan Medical Center in Milwaukee, where he served as chief resident. He completed his fellowship in infectious diseases at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI. He is interested in all aspects of clinical infectious diseases and has a special interest in the medical problems of travelers and difficult to heal wounds. Dr. Vemuri is board certified in internal medicine and infectious disease. He is medical director of the Mercy Wound Treatment Center and Hyperbaric Medicine Department. He and his wife, Indira, have two children.


Neil R. Horning, MD, was born and raised in Bristol, TN. He received a bachelor of arts degree at the University of Tennessee, and his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. His internal medicine, and pulmonary and critical care medicine training was obtained at Barnes Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. At Washington University, he conducted research regarding the immunopathogenesis of asthma, and the optimization of immunosuppression of lung transplant recipients. Dr. Horning is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care medicine. His interests include asthma, immunology, emphysema, and smoking cessation. Dr. Horning and his wife, Susan, have one son.


Wendy L. Fluegel, MD, born and raised in central Missouri, attended school at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. She subsequently received training in internal medicine, pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She was chief resident in internal medicine. Dr. Fluegel was an associate professor at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, in conjunction with private practice from 1995 to 1998. Research interests include alternative treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea and asthma treatment and outcome. She continues to be interested in all aspects of sleep medicine and pulmonary disorders. She is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary and sleep medicine with board eligibility in critical care medicine. Dr. Fluegel has one daughter.


Karen Kinney, MD, was born in Oklahoma. She attended under-graduate school at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, and Cameron University in Lawton, OK. She received her medical degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1996. She completed her internal medicine residency and infectious disease fellowship at the University of Oklahoma Health Services Center in Oklahoma City. Dr. Kinney is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the specialty of internal medicine and is board eligible in the subspecialty of infectious diseases. Areas of special interest include HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C and infections in immunocompromised patients.


Maxwell S. Cosmic, M.D., was born in India. He received his medical degree from Trivandrum Medical College, India. He underwent further training in internal medicine in England and obtained MRCP (Member of Royal College of Physicians of UK) degree. He moved with his family to the United States in 1997. His internal medicine residency was at SUNY Buffalo, NY, where he served as chief resident. He subsequently completed his pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship training at Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. During fellowship training, he did research on genetic link of venous thromboembolism. Dr. Cosmic is board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine with board eligibility in critical care medicine. Areas of special interest include asthma, pulmonary embolism and critical care medicine. He and his wife, Jaflet, have two children.


Jason B. Wittmer, M.D., was born and raised in central Kansas. He completed undergraduate and medical education at the University of Kansas. He completed internal medicine residency and pulmonary/critical care fellowships at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. Dr. Wittmer is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, sleep medicine and critical care medicine. Areas of special interest include pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease, interventional pulmonary procedures and critical care. He and his wife, Kathryn, have two sons.


Daniel Barth, DO was born and raised in Iowa. He completed his medical degree at Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center. His internal medicine residency was completed through the University of Iowa – Des Moines at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He completed his pulmonary and critical care medicine fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He is board certified in internal medicine, critical care and pulmonary disease. Areas of special interest include COPD, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension.


Nargis Naheed, M.D., was born in Pakistan, graduated from Fatima Jinnah Medical College in 1993, and came to the United States in 1998. She began her post-graduate training in Lahore, Pakistan. She completed her internal medicine internship and residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Jamaica, New York. She completed her infectious disease fellowship at the SUNY Health Science Center, Brooklyn, New York in 2003. She is board certified in internal medicine, infectious disease and geriatric medicine. Her special interests include HIV and hepatitis.


Angie Beckel,MSN,ARNP,FNP-C, is a native of Norwalk. Angie is a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Masters of Science in Nursing from the University of Iowa. While attending the University, she studied abroad in Jamaica for a cross-cultural program, in which she participated and learned about their healthcare system. Angie’s employment background includes Emergency Room, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, and Intensive Care Units at the University of Iowa Hospitals. She has also worked as a Teaching Assistant for U of I Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice program, and for Iowa Health Home Care. Angie and her husband recently moved back to the area, and reside in Clive.
